Big changes are coming to the future of social VR on Meta platforms. In a newly released announcement, the company confirmed that Horizon Worlds will be transitioning away from VR entirely and becoming a mobile-only experience in 2026.
This marks a major shift for users on Meta Quest, especially those who regularly explore Horizon Worlds in VR. Here’s a full breakdown of what’s happening, when it’s happening, and what it means for you.
Why Meta Is Making This Change
Earlier this year, Meta shared that it plans to separate its VR platform from Horizon Worlds so each can grow independently. The goal is to streamline the experience and allow Horizon Worlds to expand more effectively on mobile devices.
In simple terms:
- VR and Horizon are no longer being treated as one ecosystem
- Horizon Worlds is being repositioned as a mobile-first platform
Key Dates You Need to Know
📅 March 24, 2026
- Hyperscape Capture changes
- Viewing Hyperscape captures will move out of Horizon Worlds
- Existing captures will still be accessible in the Hyperscape Capture (Beta) and Preview apps
- You can still create captures, but sharing and co-experiencing will be removed
📅 March 31, 2026
- Horizon Worlds and Events will no longer appear in the Quest Store
- Several major worlds will be removed from VR, including:
- Horizon Central
- Events Arena
- Kaiju
- Bobber Bay
- Meta Horizon Plus (MH+) changes:
- Horizon-specific perks will be removed, including:
- Meta Credits
- Digital clothing
- Avatars
- In-world purchases
- Core gaming benefits and monthly games will remain unchanged
- Horizon-specific perks will be removed, including:
📅 June 15, 2026 (Final Cutoff)
- The Horizon Worlds app will be completely removed from Quest
- All Horizon Worlds experiences will no longer be accessible in VR
- Users will need to switch to the Meta Horizon mobile app to continue accessing worlds
What This Means for VR Users
If you primarily use Horizon Worlds in VR, this is a significant loss. After June 15, 2026:
- You will no longer be able to access any Horizon Worlds content in VR
- Social worlds, events, and experiences will move entirely to mobile
- VR users will need to rely on other social platforms or experiences
However, until that cutoff date, you can still:
- Explore your favorite worlds in VR
- Spend time in community-created experiences
- Enjoy Horizon Worlds as it currently exists
The Bigger Picture
This move signals a shift in strategy from Meta. While VR remains a key focus, Horizon Worlds is no longer central to that vision in the same way.
Instead:
- VR may focus more on games, productivity, and immersive apps
- Horizon Worlds evolves into a mobile social platform
For creators and users, this raises questions about the future of social VR, but also opens the door for new platforms to step in.
My Opinion
The end of Horizon Worlds in VR marks the end of an era for Meta Quest users. While I definitely found the push of Horizon Worlds in the Store, Library, etc. overkill, I didn’t mind going into some Worlds every once in a while. They obviously feel the cost to support the VR aspect is too much. For the creators sake, I’m glad they still have the mobile option but I know many built their Worlds for VR.
I also wonder what will happen to the live events that Meta often hosted in Worlds. Are we still going to have concerts or other things like that? Obviously not in worlds but maybe in some other form? Only time will tell.
If you enjoy Horizon Worlds in VR, now is the time to jump in and experience it before it’s gone for good.
What are some of your favourite Worlds?
