If you’re new to the Meta Quest 3 or Meta Quest 3S, the first few hours can be exciting and also a little overwhelming. Between blurry visuals, confusing settings, and comfort issues, many new users don’t realize how much better the experience can be with just a few simple adjustments.
This guide covers the top 10 beginner tips every new Quest 3 or 3S owner should know. These tips will help improve clarity, comfort, safety, and overall ease of use right from day one.
Honestly, it was hard to narrow it down to just ten. So I did my best but will make some other compilations of settings as well. I’ve made dozens of individual tip videos you can check out here: https://truenorthvr.com/vr-tips-and-tricks/
1. Fix Blurry Vision Before Anything Else
Blurry visuals are the most common complaint from new Quest users. It’s almost always caused by poor headset positioning or incorrect IPD settings.
The Meta Quest 3 features an IPD adjustment wheel on the bottom of the headset. Slowly turn it while looking at text until everything snaps into focus. Don’t rush this step, small adjustments make a big difference.
The Meta Quest 3s does not have the adjustment wheel but you can physically move the lenses narrower or further apart. It has fewer options than the Quest 3.
Also, try positioning the headset slightly higher on your face than you might expect. The Quest 3 and 3s lenses are sensitive to vertical placement, and even a small shift can dramatically improve clarity.
2. Enable Double-Tap Passthrough
Double-tap passthrough lets you instantly see your real-world surroundings by tapping the side of the headset twice.
This feature is incredibly useful for beginners, especially when:
- Checking your play space
- Talking to someone nearby
- Grabbing controllers or a drink
It is enabled by default so you don’t even need to go into the settings to make any changes!
3. How to Remove the Head Strap and Facial Interface
Many beginners don’t realize that the head strap and facial interface are removable on the Quest 3 and 3S.
Knowing how to remove them is important for:
- Installing third-party head straps (which I highly recommend)
- Swapping facial interfaces (which I also highly recommend)
- Cleaning or replacing worn parts
Both components are designed to come off safely without tools. Just be gentle and follow the correct removal points to avoid unnecessary strain on the headset.
4. Turn On Battery Saver for Longer Play Sessions
Battery life is one of the biggest limitations of standalone VR headsets. Enabling Battery Saver Mode, and adjusting some other settings can significantly extend your playtime.
Battery Saver slightly reduces performance, but for casual gaming, media viewing, or browsing, the difference is barely noticeable while the battery improvement is very noticeable.
This is an especially helpful setting for new users who don’t yet own an external battery or elite strap.
You can also do things like adjusting the brightness, changing the screen timeout, auto dimming, etc.
5. How to Change Boundary Settings
If your boundary keeps resetting or feels too sensitive, adjusting the boundary settings can greatly improve your experience.
From the settings menu, you can:
- Redraw your boundary manually
- Change between stationary or room scale boundaries
- Adjust the sensitivity when you are near the boundary
- Adjust how often the headset asks you to re-confirm your play area
This is especially useful if you play in the same space every day and want a more consistent setup.
6. Clean the Lenses the Right Way
The Quest 3 lenses are delicate, and cleaning them incorrectly can cause permanent damage.
Always use a clean microfiber cloth, the kind used for glasses.
Never use:
- Paper towels
- Clothing
- Cleaning sprays or liquids
A quick, gentle wipe is all you need. Keeping the lenses clean helps maintain sharp visuals and prevents long-term scratches.
You can get lens inserts that can act as a buffer or protection for the Meta Quest 3 or 3s lenses. These are usually done with prescriptions for glasses wearers but you can get them without prescriptions if you just want another layer of protection.
7. How to Use Hand Tracking
Hand tracking allows you to navigate menus and interact with certain apps/games without controllers.
For beginners, this is especially useful for:
- Browsing menus
- Watching videos
- Light interactions in mixed reality
While hand tracking isn’t perfect, it works surprisingly well for everyday use and reduces the need to constantly pick up controllers.
8. Improve Tracking with Better Lighting
The Quest 3 and 3s uses cameras to track your movements, and lighting plays a huge role in how well it works.
For best results:
- Avoid playing in complete darkness
- Use soft, consistent lighting
- Avoid flickering LED lights or mirrors in your play area
A simple desk lamp can dramatically improve tracking accuracy and reduce glitches.
9. Restart Your Headset Regularly
Just like a smartphone or computer, your Quest headset benefits from regular restarts.
Restarting once a week can:
- Improve performance
- Fix minor bugs
- Reduce tracking issues
If your headset ever feels slow or glitchy, a quick restart often solves the problem. This seems like a silly tip but it’s important!
Make sure you aren’t just putting your Quest to sleep by pressing the power button. Hold the power button until the “Power Options” menu appears and select power down.
10. Use Rechargeable Batteries for Controllers
The Quest Touch Plus controllers use AA batteries, and replacing them frequently can get expensive and frustrating. Nothing like grabbing your headset only to get the notification that the controllers are about to die.
Rechargeable AA batteries are a simple upgrade that:
- Saves money over time
- Reduces waste
- Keeps your controllers ready to go
Controllers typically last much longer than the headset itself, but rechargeable batteries make them even more convenient.
There are various accessories like charging docks, grips with charging built in, and more that come with or allow for controller charging. But a simple set (or two) of rechargeable AA batteries is really all you need.
Final Thoughts
The Meta Quest 3 and 3s are powerful VR headsets, but the default experience doesn’t always show them at their best. With these beginner tips, you’ll get clearer visuals, better comfort, longer battery life, and a smoother overall experience.
