How to Get the Old Meta Quest UI Back for Free with Lightning Launcher

Share:

If you’ve been missing the old Meta Quest interface (before the update in early 2026), you’re not alone. Many VR enthusiasts preferred the older UI because it provided quicker access to apps, a cleaner layout, and a more efficient way to navigate their headset. And most importantly, nothing was wrong with it!

Initially, one of the most popular methods for restoring the classic interface was through Quest Games Optimizer (QGO). While QGO remains an excellent utility for improving game performance and visual quality, it does require a paid license. So if you already had it, there was no issue. But many users don’t want to have to pay the $10 to do this (which I totally understand).

Now there’s another option: Lightning Launcher. (Video tutorial further down)

Lightning Launcher is a free launcher for Meta Quest headsets that allows users to access and use the classic-style application library experience without purchasing additional software. For many users, it’s the simplest way to bring back a familiar interface while maintaining access to their favorite VR apps and games.

It is available on the Meta Store for free here: https://www.meta.com/experiences/lightning-launcher/8715195505254856/

Many Quest owners prefer the older layout because it offers:

  • Faster access to installed apps
  • A cleaner, more organized library view
  • Less scrolling and fewer menus
  • A more familiar navigation experience
  • Improved usability for users with large game libraries

The classic UI can feel more efficient, especially for long-time Quest users who were accustomed to Meta’s previous design.

Lightning Launcher is a lightweight launcher application designed specifically for Meta Quest headsets. It provides an alternative way to browse and launch your installed apps while recreating much of the functionality users enjoyed in the older Quest interface.

Best of all, it’s completely free to use. So even if you don’t want to use it for anything else, you can use it to get the old UI back.

Final Thoughts

While Meta continues to evolve the Quest operating system, not every update is a hit with every user. Personally, I’m okay with the new UI now, but if you’ve been looking for a way to bring back the classic app library experience without spending money, Lightning Launcher is an excellent solution.

It’s quick to install, easy to use, and gives Quest owners another option for customizing how they interact with their headset. Whether you’re nostalgic for the old interface or simply want a more efficient way to browse your apps, Lightning Launcher is definitely worth trying.
