Goodbye v85, Hello Meta Horizon OS 2: Everything You Need to Know About the V2.1 Update for Meta Quest

Share:

The era of confusing, double-digit firmware updates is officially over. Starting the week of February 23, 2026, Meta is rolling out a massive software shift for the Quest 3, 3S, Pro, and Quest 2 headsets: Meta Horizon OS 2.

Launching with version 2.1, this update isn’t just a simple number change, it’s a foundational step toward a more mature, streamlined, and spatially aware operating system. For those who have been eagerly awaiting the permanent arrival of the modernized “Navigator” interface, OS 2.1 is the update you’ve been waiting for.

Here is a breakdown of the biggest features hitting your headset in the coming weeks.

The Permanent Return of the Navigator UI (When it rolls out)

The driving force behind Meta Horizon OS 2 is the modernized user interface known as Navigator. While Meta’s gradual rollout of this UI over the last few months has tested users’ patience, version 2.1 puts Navigator front and center.

  • A Decluttered View: The “Worlds” tab has been removed from the system bar (you can now find it directly in your Library), and the Horizon Feed is being phased out to provide a much cleaner, distraction-free dashboard.
  • At-a-Glance Status: You will finally be able to check your headset’s battery level and Wi-Fi connection right next to the clock.
  • Smart Notifications: Ongoing activities and alerts now stay visible in your peripheral view without hijacking your current task. You can even customize exactly where they appear via your Settings.

You may be like me though and still not have it. I had the Navigator from November to Early January, but then when V85 came out they returned to the old interface. Even being part of the Public Test Channel, I haven’t received the New UI. One day, maybe…
If you have the new UI, please comment below or on the YouTube Video to share your experiences with it!

Spatial Snapping and Dynamic Window Scaling

Meta is leaning heavily into mixed-reality comfort, giving your digital workspace a massive upgrade to better blend with your physical room:

  • Snap to Reality: Apps and floating panels will now automatically detect and snap to nearby physical walls. (Don’t worry, you can always manually override this to float windows wherever you like).
  • Real-Time Resizing: As you grab and push windows further away or pull them closer, they will dynamically rescale in real time, giving you a perfect preview of their final size and placement before you let go.

I’ve already noticed on mine better positioning when it comes to floors and ceilings but I’m still waiting for the snap to walls. The Real-Time Resizing as been a lot smoother for me as well.

Xbox Integration at Your Fingertips

Cloud gaming is getting even easier to access. You no longer need to have the dedicated Xbox app installed to find your next adventure. The native Quest search bar now pulls Xbox games directly into your results, drastically streamlining how you discover new titles.

I don’t ever use Xbox on my Quest so if you have experience with this, please let me know!

Granular Media Privacy Controls

Privacy takes a much-needed step forward in 2.1. When an app requests access to your photos or videos, you no longer have to hand over the keys to your entire gallery. You can now select specific media files to share on an app-by-app basis, giving you total control over your data.

Offline Voice Dictation (Quest 3 & 3S)

For those using the newer generation of headsets, you can now leave the virtual keyboard behind even when you don’t have Wi-Fi. Version 2.1 introduces on-device voice dictation, allowing you to seamlessly type with your voice completely offline.

You’ll need to go into experimental settings and scroll to the very bottom in order to download the accessibility package for this new feature. Then go into the general settings, click on Virtual Keyboard, and you should be able to adjust any dictation settings here.

The Takeaway The jump to Meta Horizon OS 2.1 is less about flashy new games and more about transforming the Quest into a frictionless computing platform. With a sensible versioning system finally in place (expect 2.2, 2.3, etc., moving forward) and the modernized Navigator UI taking the reins, the Quest experience is officially growing up.

Version 85 had some bigger feature updates in my opinion so you can always go back and check those out here: https://truenorthvr.com/meta-quest-v85-update-overview-2/
