Looking for a charming and relaxing VR game that brings back the joy of childhood play? Toy Trains VR is a beautifully designed virtual reality puzzle game that lets you build miniature train tracks in a cozy attic setting. Developed by Something Random—a studio founded by former SUPERHOT developers—Toy Trains was officially released in January 2024 for Meta Quest 3, 3s, and 2, PlayStation VR2, and SteamVR (PCVR). Here is my quick Toy Trains VR Review!
🎮 What is Toy Trains VR?
In Toy Trains VR, players are placed in a nostalgic diorama world where tiny characters known as Railies need help connecting their tiny towns. You build tracks, bridges, slopes, and more to complete each level’s objective. It’s an open-ended puzzle game, meaning there are often multiple solutions, encouraging creativity and experimentation.
⭐ Toy Trains VR Features
- Miniature Track Building – Create intricate layouts to help Railies reach their destinations.
- Relaxing Puzzle Gameplay – No timers or high scores, just chill problem-solving.
- Multiple Solutions Per Level – Encourage out-of-the-box thinking and the ability to play through multiple times.
- Unlockable Track Pieces – Bridges, switches, slopes, and more.
- Sandbox Mode – Design your own dream railway layouts with full creative freedom.
- Immersive Attic Environment – A warm, nostalgic backdrop that enhances immersion. You can even choose between a dog or a cat sleeping on the armchair across from you.
- VR Platform Support – Playable on Meta Quest, PSVR2, and PCVR.
💡 Why Toy Trains Stands Out in VR Gaming: Slow but engaging
Unlike many fast-paced VR titles, Toy Trains emphasizes a slow, thoughtful pace and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s ideal for casual players or anyone looking for a wholesome VR experience. With simple, intuitive controls and no pressure, it’s a great pick for new VR users and puzzle game lovers alike.
The soundtrack creates an atmosphere of calm and creativity. You can find the playlist on YouTube as well. Many of the tracks have been added to my relax/study/focus playlist!
Tips for Toy Trains
From my gameplay so far, here are a few things I can suggest to new players:
First, if you grab a piece that you want to use multiple times, instead of grabbing it from the book over and over, if you hold the side trigger at the same time, you can hover over the spot where you want to place and it will enable continuous placing of that piece. You can see that in the video at the top.
Another tip I have is to go through all of the settings. In the sandbox mode, you have access to all of the music tracks, daylight settings, and so much more. I like the daylight setting the most as it makes everything the brightest. But the UFO setting is a funny addition!
Lastly, build the land up for a more versatile and interesting setup! I haven’t explored this enough yet but I have seen some pretty amazing track builds!

🚀 Final Verdict for Toy Trains: Big Thumbs Up!
Yes. That’s all I need to say, but I’ll elaborate. Toy Trains VR is a peaceful and nostalgic game that is immersive, fun, peaceful, and nostalgic. With its charming visuals, laid-back gameplay, and sandbox creativity, it’s a standout title in 2024’s VR lineup. Whether you’re a longtime enthusiast or just got your first headset, this game should be considered for your library.
There are so many little things that make this game great. The little characters (Railies, they’re called), the soundtrack, the building options, the table size, the times of day settings, the attic that you are playing in, and the potential for future growth. All of this together makes this game great.
I think the only thing that I would suggest is just more options for buildings, decor, terrain, etc. And maybe being able to have two trains going on the same track. Other than that, they’ve done a fantastic job with this game!
Thank you for reading my Toy Trains VR review. I hope you found it useful and will consider getting this awesome game!
