Learning how to use hand tracking on the Meta Quest 3 and 3s will enable you to have a better experience in virtual reality. Hand tracking is mandatory in some apps/games but just a great option when you don’t want to pick up your controllers. In the video below, you will find out how to enable hand tracking, as well as the various ways in which you can use it.

How to Enable Hand Tracking on Meta Quest 3 & 3s

Enabling hand tracking must be done in the settings. Here are the steps to do this:

  1. Go to the Settings
  2. Scroll on the left to “Movement Tracking”
  3. Make sure the first option is enabled
  4. You can choose to enable “double tap switch” or “auto switch” as well

The automatic switch to hand tracking means that you can set your controllers down on a table or surface and the system will then automatically switch to your hands. You can then pick up your controllers to switch back.

There is an option for “Auto switch sensitivity” which helps determine how quickly the Meta Quest will switch to hand tracking once the controllers are down. I usually have this on high.

The double tap to enable means literally that. You can double tap the controllers together (gently of course) to switch to hand tracking. This is very simple option to enable hand tracking.

Using hand tracking is actually pretty fun. The “cursor” will come straight out of your hand on the screen. It will take a second to get use to where it is.

You can use your index finger and your thumb to do two things. First, with a single pinch together and release, this acts as a “click” or “select”. If you pinch, hold, and move your hand up and down, this will allow you to scroll on a page.

The other major control of hand tracking is turning your palm toward your face. If you turn your right palm to your face, you will see the Meta symbol appear. By pinching your thumb and index finger together, it will act as a click on that button. If you hold your fingers together in that position, it will be as if you are holding the Meta button on the controller and recenter you. You can enable “Expand Quick Actions” on that same menu as above which will give you more options when you pinch and hold on the Meta button.

By turning your left palm to your face, you will see the left menu button. You can then pinch your left thumb and index finger to click it and open the new Immersive Home options.
